Domestic Credit Utilization Scheme for Supporting Recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake
‘’To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to support earthquake-affected areas’’
H.E. Yukio Edano, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan
In order to support recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake and to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions at small and medium enterprises (SMEs) etc., the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) launched in May this year the Domestic Credit Utilization Scheme for Support of Recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake as a new approach taking advantage of the domestic Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
In this scheme, 50 percent of the domestic credit sales proceeds which emissions reduction businesses receive will be donated to disaster-affected areas using the domestic CDM framework, so that such contribution will help recovery from the earthquake. It is estimated at present that about 30,000 tons of domestic credit will be sold and about 20 million yen will be donated for support of the disaster-affected areas using this scheme. As the first step, half of the money obtained from the sale of about 4,000 tons (about 3 million yen) will be donated to disaster-affected areas at the end of November.
